REVIEW | SIAM THAI KITCHEN EXPRESS | EDMONTON

Siam Thai Kitchen, my favourite Thai restaurant in the city, has opened a second restaurant! This "express" location offers a more condensed menu, focusing on individual meals, as opposed to family style, at a more affordable price. A great option for lunch or a quick, casual dinner!

The restaurant is tucked away in the new development off 137 Ave and Mark Messier Trail. It's about 10 minutes north of their OG location.

The restaurant is a pretty open space with a mixture of booths and tables. Patrons of the OG location will recognize the mural that graces the main wall.

One unique feature at this restaurant is a robot server! While a human staff member still takes your order, the robo-cat delivers the food straight from the kitchen to your table. Once you finish grabbing the food from the trays, a simple tap on the touch screen will return the robot to the kitchen. Super cool! Would be a hit with kiddos.

Pad Thai ($16.95) is always a favourite and Siam Thai consistently delivers. Rice noodles stir fried with homemade tamarind sauce, egg, tofu, beansprouts, chives, and your choice of chicken or beef. Garnishes on the side include lime, roasted peanuts, and chili sauce. The noodles are well-balanced with all the right flavour notes. Sweet, salty, tangy, smokey. Delicious!

SP ordered one of their curries. The green curry ($16.95) is one of their spicier options and comes in an individual portion with a side of jasmine or coconut rice. The green curry comes with your choice of chicken or beef, bell peppers, cauliflower, bamboo shoots, and snap peas. SP really enjoyed it. Siam Thai makes all of their curry pastes in house, so you know you're getting a really flavourful and aromatic curry.

My order was the pad kra pao ($16.95). After having this dish at Pai in Toronto last year, I've been on the hunt for it in the city. Glad that Siam Thai has started making it at this location! Pad kra pao is a stir-fry with minced beef, basil, onions, and Thai chili. It's served over coconut or jasmine rice with a fried egg and two veggie spring rolls. The veggie spring rolls aren't anything too special but they're a nice little side.

The pad kra pao was great! The meat was fragrant from the basil and had a good kick from the chilis. Not overly hot but a good, slow burn. My favourite part of this dish was the lacey fried egg! Mixing the yolk in helps quell some of the spice and adds a bit of creaminess. One of my new favourite dishes!

I'm never not craving Thai food from Siam Thai. Happy to know the express location is just as good.
